Mexico player ratings vs. Serbia: Álvaro Fidalgo and Brian Gutierrez shine as El Tri hit five in final World Cup warm-up

Mexico’s latest showing offered several encouraging signs ahead of its World Cup debut, with Alexis Vega emerging as one of the standout performers. Playing in front of what felt like a supportive home crowd, Vega brought energy, sharpness and confidence to the attack. He was involved in nearly every promising sequence, and one of his attempts came agonizingly close to producing a spectacular goal after striking the crossbar. His performance suggested a player in strong form and eager to make an impact when the tournament begins.

Guillermo Martinez added a different dimension to Mexico’s attack by serving as a physical presence in aerial battles and giving the team a reliable reference point up front. While his contribution was not flashy, it was important in helping Mexico play more directly when needed. His increased minutes, especially compared with Santiago Gimenez and Armando Gonzalez ahead of the June 11 debut, highlight an intriguing selection picture for the coaching staff.

Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora continued to impress with his maturity and fearlessness. He consistently demanded the ball from his teammates and showed no hesitation in taking responsibility in key moments. Even when the match did not fully tilt in his favor, his confidence and willingness to participate stood out as a major positive for Mexico’s future.

Israel Reyes provided calm and balance after coming on, settling comfortably into the center-back role and showing composure in his defensive interventions. His presence helped Mexico maintain a clean and organized shape at the back. Edson Alvarez, meanwhile, was still searching for his best rhythm and appears to be under pressure in the battle for the defensive midfield role. At this stage, the competition for that position seems to be leaning toward his rival.

Luis Chavez once again demonstrated his value as a bench option, bringing pace and creativity to the midfield while also carrying his trademark long-range goal threat. Mateo Chavez delivered a similarly energetic performance on the left side, combining attacking ambition with the kind of youthful intensity that has caught Javier Aguirre’s attention. Orbelin Pineda was quieter in possession but remained active and useful in limited minutes, contributing movement and energy whenever involved.

Luis Romo also strengthened his case by showing versatility and composure in the buildup from deep areas. Whether starting or coming off the bench, his ability to connect defense and attack remains an asset for Mexico as the team prepares for more demanding tests.

For coach Javier Aguirre, the overall result is encouraging. His squad looks organized, motivated and increasingly difficult to select, which gives him welcome competition across several positions. With the World Cup debut approaching, Mexico appears to be building confidence at the right time, and Aguirre will now face the challenge of choosing the best possible starting XI.
