Portland Fire vs. Connecticut Sun: 3 Key Storylines to Watch as the Fire Return to the Moda Center

The Portland Fire return to the Moda Center this week to open a three-game homestand with another meeting against Connecticut, and the matchup brings several important storylines for the young franchise. Portland enters the game riding real momentum after winning two straight for the first time in the 2026 season. Those victories included a convincing 19-point road win in Toronto and a narrow comeback victory in New York, results that have helped the Fire move from preseason afterthought to a team with a legitimate chance to challenge in the Western Conference.
A third straight win would be a significant step for Portland, especially given where the team started the year. The Fire have shown steady growth and resilience, and this stretch has given them confidence that they can compete with more established opponents. Back-to-back victories have already changed the tone around the team, and another win at home would strengthen the sense that Portland is beginning to find its identity.
The Sun, however, remain a difficult test even with Brittney Griner listed as out. Griner led Connecticut with 16 points in the teams’ previous meeting, and her absence changes the look of the matchup, but the Sun still bring plenty of size and physicality inside. Aneesah Morrow has been a force on the boards and in scoring, highlighted by a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double on May 18. Aaliyah Edwards also adds strength in the paint after scoring 12 points in that same game. Connecticut also has perimeter scoring threats, including Hailey Van Lith, who is capable of stretching defenses with her three-point shooting and scored 12 points in the last meeting between the teams. That combination means Portland will still need to be disciplined on both ends, particularly in controlling rebounds and defending the interior.
Carla Leite’s return to the Moda Center is another major subplot. The last time she played a home game in Portland was during the Fire’s stunning May 12 win over the New York Liberty, when she twisted her ankle late in the game. Although she finished that contest, she missed the next two games before returning to form in Monday night’s victory in New York. Her performance there reminded fans of the spark she can provide, and Portland supporters will be eager to see her back in front of the home crowd.
Wednesday’s game will also mark the Moda Center debut of 35-year-old rookie point guard Teja Oblak, who first appeared in Portland’s win in Toronto. Her presence adds another intriguing layer to a roster that continues to evolve. With the Fire building momentum, integrating new contributors, and facing a physically demanding Connecticut team, the homestand offers another chance for Portland to prove that its early-season progress is real.
