Grey’s Anatomy Cast Members Reveal How They Learn They’re Being Written Off

Jason George has revealed how Grey’s Anatomy handles potential cast exits, saying the long-running medical drama tries to inform actors as early as possible if their characters may be written off. In a recent interview, the actor, who plays Ben Warren, said the show’s writers and producers approach difficult story decisions with “respect” and make calls to performers before those decisions are finalized whenever possible. That approach stood out to him because, in some TV productions, actors do not find out until a table read that they are leaving the series.

George’s comments come after Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 delivered major departures for several characters, including Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt, whose exits had already been confirmed in advance. He said the process on Grey’s Anatomy is more considerate than what he has heard happens on other shows, where cast members are sometimes blindsided and learn they are being written out at the same time as the rest of the ensemble.

The actor also reflected on his own experience when he was called to join the Station 19 spinoff. At the time, he initially feared the call meant Ben Warren was being removed from Grey’s Anatomy. Instead, he ended up continuing with the franchise and later returned to the medical series after Station 19 was canceled. George said that kind of communication is important because the people involved are talking about livelihoods, not just fictional plotlines.

The article also noted that other productions have handled character exits very differently. As an example, actors on 1923 reportedly learned about a major mass death only when they read the script. By contrast, former Grey’s Anatomy guest star Natalie Morales learned Monica Beltran was being killed off when the showrunner called to ask whether she would return for the Season 22 premiere. That conversation is when she discovered the character’s fate.

Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy ended with dramatic cliffhangers, but the departures of Teddy and Owen were not unexpected because their exits had been announced beforehand. Still, George’s comments highlight how much thought goes into managing cast changes on a long-running series that has faced budget pressures, smaller episode orders, and repeated departures over the years.

Heading into Season 23, Ben Warren’s future is not in doubt. Fans can expect to see him continue in the franchise, along with the planned Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff. Meanwhile, all 22 seasons of the medical drama remain available to stream, with the latest season set to arrive on Netflix on June 5.
