Rafael Cardoso Admits Relapse and Enters Rehabilitation Clinic

Brazilian actor Rafael Cardoso has entered rehabilitation to continue treatment for chemical dependency and alcoholism, days after becoming involved in an incident during a charity Spiritist event in Volta Redonda, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro. The information was confirmed by his press team and accompanied by a video recorded by the actor on Thursday night, June 4, shortly before his admission to a recovery clinic.

In the video, Cardoso appears emotional as he says goodbye to his family and publicly acknowledges that he relapsed after years of struggling with addiction. He says he decided to seek treatment on his own and will remain in the clinic for as long as necessary to recover. In his message, the actor emphasizes the importance of self-care and says he wants to get better for his family and children. He also states that he expects to return after completing this new phase of treatment.

The decision to enter rehab comes only a few days after a controversy at a shopping mall event in Volta Redonda on Saturday, May 30, which was part of the promotion for the film Sexo e Destino, inspired by a psychographed work attributed to Chico Xavier, in which Cardoso is part of the cast. According to accounts from people present at the event, the actor allegedly arrived appearing intoxicated and had difficulty taking part in the scheduled activities. A lecture planned for the occasion was ultimately not held.

Reports also indicated that event organizers allegedly asked Cardoso to leave after noticing his condition. He reportedly left before the program ended. Later that same day, he was seen walking alone through the city and was then reportedly found at a bar in the Monte Castelo community. People who said they spoke with him claimed that he identified himself as a “famous Globo actor” and said he was currently appearing in a soap opera.

Cardoso’s rehabilitation follows a period of public attention surrounding his behavior and health. His admission to treatment suggests a renewed attempt to address long-standing personal struggles with addiction, which he described as an ongoing battle. The actor’s statement portrays the move as voluntary and focused on recovery, family, and stability.

At present, Rafael Cardoso is also visible to television audiences in the rerun of Além do Tempo, airing in the broadcaster’s “Edição Especial” afternoon slot.
