Role Model Explains the Concept Behind His Chuck Timely Album and “High Hopes 3000” Video
Role Model is opening a new chapter with a retro-themed single and video that introduce a mysterious alter ego named Chuck Timely. The singer, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury, has built anticipation for his third studio album, Chuck Timely and the Hourglass, due out on August 7, by centering the rollout around the character. In the “High Hopes 3000” music video, Chuck is portrayed as a jean-jacket-wearing slacker mechanic who would rather rollerskate around town than answer to his grumpy boss.
Interest in Chuck Timely began earlier this spring, when Role Model launched an Instagram account that placed the character into iconic pop culture moments, including images with Paul McCartney and John Lennon during the Abbey Road era and another alongside Britney Spears and an old Mac computer in the 1990s. Role Model has kept the character’s backstory intentionally vague, describing Chuck as a kind of timeless legend who has moved through different eras and picked up pieces from each one. He also says Chuck will appear on stage during his live shows, making the character part of the album’s broader world.
The “High Hopes 3000” video, filmed in Piermont, New York, serves as the first full reveal of this new concept. It follows the success of Role Model’s 2024 album Kansas Anymore, which featured the breakthrough song “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.” That track became one of his signature songs and inspired a wave of live appearances from celebrity “Sallys,” including Natalie Portman, Olivia Rodrigo, Kate Hudson, and Charli xcx during his October 2025 Saturday Night Live performance. Role Model says that song helped him find a strong creative world for his voice and gave him more confidence going into this next phase.
“High Hopes 3000” continues in that spirit with a warm, sing-along rock sound that blends nostalgic influences with a playful, modern edge. Role Model says the song and video were inspired by a mix of Footloose, Punch-Drunk Love, Hall & Oates, the Doobie Brothers, and the Georgia Satellites. He described the mood as something like “a cowboy on a yacht” drifting down a gritty Pennsylvania river, capturing the song’s offbeat, Americana-leaning energy.
Although the imagery around Chuck Timely includes cassette tapes and old-school references, Role Model says he is not personally from the cassette era. He explained that while his mother introduced him to great music early on, he mostly discovered songs by downloading them to his iPod. The deeper theme connecting the project, he says, is time and his relationship to it. He hinted that the new music will explore the pressure of time in a more personal way, though he did not reveal full details.
For now, “High Hopes 3000” introduces the next phase of Role Model’s career: a playful, character-driven era that lets him step outside himself while still speaking to the same emotional longing and charm that made his earlier work connect.
