Zendaya’s Mom Reacts Cryptically to Shocking Euphoria Ending

Zendaya’s mother, Claire Stoermer, reacted quietly on Instagram Stories after the shocking Season 3 finale of Euphoria left fans emotional and divided. She said she had received many direct messages about the episode and chose to keep her full thoughts private, adding that the ending made her sad and brought up “other emotions” as well. Her post came after viewers watched one of the series’ most beloved characters meet a devastating fate in what HBO has confirmed is the show’s final season.
The finale delivered a major twist when Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, died from a fentanyl overdose after relapsing on laced painkillers given to her by Alamo Brown, portrayed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The death marked the end of Zendaya’s long-running role as Rue, a performance that helped define the series since its debut in 2019 and earned her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Zendaya made history as the youngest winner in that category after her first win in 2020, and she won again in 2022.
Following the episode, HBO aired behind-the-scenes footage in which Zendaya thanked the cast and crew for the experience. She said she was grateful for everyone involved and noted that many had been with the production from the beginning, watching her grow over the years. Her message reflected the emotional weight of the character’s ending and the close of a major chapter in her career.
Series creator Sam Levinson defended the decision to end Rue’s story in such a tragic way, saying it felt like the most honest conclusion. He said he wanted to tell the story for Angus Cloud, who played Fez in the first two seasons before dying in July 2023 at age 25 from an accidental overdose. Levinson said Rue’s fate reflected the reality that people struggling with addiction do not always get a second chance, especially amid the fentanyl crisis. He described the finale as a story about addiction and its consequences, and said it felt like the proper end to the series.
Levinson also said the finale served as a tribute to Cloud. He noted that the episode included never-before-seen footage of the late actor, which he described as an intentional gesture to honor him and offer “a prayer for the future.” According to Levinson, the ending was heartbreaking but truthful.
Rue’s death was not the only dramatic moment in the finale. Jacob Elordi’s character, Nate Jacobs, also faced a shocking fate when he found himself buried alive in a coffin and confronted by a rattlesnake. In a post-show HBO segment, Elordi said filming the scene was physically cramped but oddly peaceful, and he described Nate’s ending as a fitting conclusion for a character defined by bad choices and dark behavior.
The final episode brought a grim and emotional close to one of HBO’s most talked-about dramas. Euphoria is now streaming on HBO Max.
