IPL 2026: RCB vs GT Qualifier 1 Match Preview and Key Talking Points

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT) meet in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2026 in Dharamsala, with both teams arriving in strong form but via different routes. RCB have been one of the most consistent sides in the tournament, winning five matches in the first half and four in the second, and finishing with another top-two placing that reflects the stability of their settled XI and their aggressive, result-oriented approach. GT, meanwhile, have undergone a notable transformation since their earlier loss to RCB in Bengaluru on April 24, when they were still a more cautious, middle-of-the-table outfit. Since that defeat, GT’s batting intent has sharpened significantly, with their scoring rate improving by nearly a run an over and their chasing approach becoming more aggressive. They have also posted imposing first-innings totals of 229 in two recent batting-first matches, underlining their new willingness to push for above-par scores rather than merely control the game.
GT’s improvement has been built on strong fundamentals rather than a wholesale tactical overhaul. Their control rate has dipped slightly, but the added risk has brought greater reward, and their bowling has remained efficient and threatening throughout. Jason Holder has strengthened an already disciplined attack, and the team has won six of their seven matches in the second half of the season. RCB, by contrast, have remained steady and balanced, continuing the template that helped them win the title last year. They will be keen to move straight from Dharamsala to Ahmedabad, where they lifted the trophy last season, and avoid the possibility of facing GT in a final on home turf. GT will also carry the confidence of a four-match winning run at home, including two victories after losing the toss.
RCB’s main selection concern is the fitness of opener Phil Salt, who is racing to be ready for the playoffs after returning to India. If he is unavailable, RCB may consider reshuffling their balance, though Venkatesh Iyer has made a case for inclusion. GT, meanwhile, appear close to settled, with Nishant Sindhu continuing as the extra batter and the only major uncertainty being whether they add an extra fast bowler or spinner as their Impact Player.
The spotlight falls on two of the IPL’s leading wicket-takers, RCB’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and GT’s Kagiso Rabada. Bhuvneshwar has been more versatile, especially at the death, while Rabada has been used primarily as a new-ball weapon. Both have favorable match-ups: Rabada has dismissed Virat Kohli five times in 16 innings, while Bhuvneshwar has controlled Shubman Gill effectively. The powerplay battle could shape the contest, as both teams have been among the best bowling sides in that phase.
Dharamsala’s pitch and conditions are expected to favor chasing. Night games there have generally been easier for batters under lights, with the ball tending to hold early before settling down, and the thin air and small outfield making totals difficult to defend. Clear weather should ensure a result, as RCB and GT meet in a high-stakes playoff clash with little separating them on paper or in recent form.
