Sabalenka and Osaka Bring Flair to Paris, while Medvedev Unravels
World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the second round of the French Open with a polished 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, combining strong play with a bold black-and-red outfit and diamond necklace that drew attention on a hot day in Paris. Naomi Osaka also stood out both for style and performance, arriving in a sparkling match-day ensemble before beating German Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6(3) on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Reigning women’s champion Coco Gauff recovered from a slow start to defeat Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0, while several other Americans also moved through as extreme heat made conditions difficult for players and spectators at Roland Garros. Fifth seed Jessica Pegula was the biggest surprise exit in the women’s draw, falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Australian Kimberly Birrell.
In the men’s competition, world number one Jannik Sinner continued his chase for a first French Open title and a career Grand Slam with a commanding 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory over French wildcard Clement Tabur in the evening session on Court Philippe Chatrier. Sinner extended his winning streak to 30 matches, dropping only briefly in the third set before reasserting control.
The day also brought disappointment for sixth seed Daniil Medvedev, who suffered another early exit at Roland Garros after losing a five-set battle to Australian wildcard Adam Walton 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Medvedev, who has often struggled in Paris, said he did not want to make excuses and suggested that a warm-up tournament before the Grand Slam might be worth considering next year.
Walton said the brutal heat suited him, noting that growing up in Queensland helped him handle the furnace-like conditions. The Australian’s win was part of a strong day for his country, with Alex de Minaur also progressing after Belgian Alexander Blockx withdrew with a right ankle sprain.
Other notable men’s results included Stefanos Tsitsipas advancing when France’s Alexandre Muller retired injured while trailing 6-2, 3-0. British player Cameron Norrie was forced to pull out due to a rib problem after losing the first set in a tiebreak and going down 2-0 in the second.
Among the emerging names, American teenager Learner Tien impressed with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Cristian Garin, while compatriots Zachary Svajda, Emma Navarro, Iva Jovic, Claire Liu and Ann Li all moved on with relatively little trouble.
French fans also saw a glimpse of the future when 17-year-old wildcard Moise Kouame defeated former U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1. Kouame became the youngest man to win a Grand Slam main-draw match in 17 years, calling the moment emotional and exceptional after extensive preparation with his team.
