Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day World Premieres at SXSW London
At SXSW London, the film program opened its second edition with the world premiere of Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day at the Barbican Centre, blending literary adaptation with a light, modern comic sensibility. The screening marked the opening-night curtain raiser for the festival’s film strand and drew a strong reception from the audience, along with a red-carpet appearance by the cast and creative team.
The film stars Haley Bennett, Jack Whitehall and Timothy Spall, with writer and producer Justine Waddell and director Tina Ghavari also present at the premiere. Set in 1910 and adapted from Virginia Woolf’s novel, the story centers on Katharine, an ambitious young astronomer played by Bennett. Determined to avoid love and marriage, Katharine wants to devote herself to the stars and to Cambridge University, but faces pressure from her controlling father, played by Spall, who wants to steer her away from science and toward marriage with family friend William, played by Whitehall.
As the conflict intensifies, Katharine pushes back against the expectations imposed on her by becoming involved in the Suffragette movement. There, she encounters Mary, a spirited and outspoken figure played by Lily Allen, who helps inspire her resistance. The film combines period-drama settings with themes of independence, gender roles and social change, while also leaning into a playful tone that distinguishes it from more traditional literary adaptations.
Following the premiere, Waddell told the audience that she was drawn to a more unusual side of Woolf’s work. She said she did not expect Virginia Woolf to feel “wacky,” and described that comic energy as one of the qualities that made the material appealing to her. In shaping the adaptation with Ghavari, she said they discussed a youthful, rebellious tone inspired by John Hughes films such as 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club, aiming to bring a kind of teenage spirit into a costume drama.
Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day has been picked up for U.K. release by Vue Lumiere and was recently acquired by Quiver for distribution in the United States. The film was produced by Waddell, Christopher Figg, Meg Thomson, Stephen Julius, Julie Link and Philipp Steffens, with co-producers Annegret Weitkämper-Krug, Sebastian Leutner and Marc Gabizon. Executive producers include Egor Noskov, Margarethe Baillou, Lara Ta, Nadya Gorshkova, Elena Simone, Anke Klesper, Enzo Zelocchi, Konstantin Korenchuk, Saskia Thomas, Ian Hutchinson, Richard Swift, Marc Grewe, Gayle Woodruffe and Alison Gwynn.
