Val Kilmer Criticized by Director as “Worst Human” One Year After His Death

Director Adam Marcus has reignited discussion about Val Kilmer’s reputation after making harsh remarks about the late actor and his behavior on the set of the 2018 film Conspiracy. Marcus posted a photo of himself with Kilmer on social media and accused him of being physically abusive, verbally abusive, sexually inappropriate toward female cast members, frequently late to set, and impaired during production. He described Kilmer as the “worst human being” he had ever known and later defended his decision to speak critically about him after the actor’s death.
Kilmer, who died in April 2025 at age 65 from pneumonia following years of health issues linked to throat cancer, left behind a major Hollywood legacy built on memorable performances in films including Top Gun, Batman Forever, Tombstone, and The Doors. Marcus’ comments added to a long-running public debate about Kilmer’s professionalism, as several filmmakers had previously described him as difficult to work with.
At the same time, Kilmer had addressed his controversial reputation before his death. In interviews and in the 2021 documentary Val, he acknowledged that he had sometimes alienated people during his career, while also emphasizing his dedication to acting and personal growth over time. Not everyone shared Marcus’ negative view, either, as some former co-stars and colleagues praised Kilmer as professional, kind, and highly committed to his craft.
The latest comments have once again highlighted the divide around Kilmer’s legacy: a talented and influential actor whose body of work remains widely respected, but whose on-set conduct was often the subject of criticism.
