TVK’s Rajya Sabha Pick: Who Will Vijay Choose?

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leadership is reportedly weighing its next political move carefully, especially as it considers how any decision may affect its relationship with the Congress leadership in Delhi. Although some Congress members are still said to be in talks with TVK on the issue, party insiders believe that sending one of TVK’s long-serving workers to Parliament may be the preferred path.

According to the report, the two main names under consideration are Loyola Mani and Sampath Kumar, both of whom belong to Scheduled Caste communities. Loyola Mani is said to be from the Adi Dravidar community, while Sampath Kumar belongs to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community. Since eight Dalits are already represented in the cabinet, with seven of them from the Adi Dravidar community, there is a growing view that Sampath Kumar may have a better chance of being chosen, as his selection could provide broader caste balance.

At the same time, there is hesitation within Vijay’s strategy team about the political consequences of reserving both cabinet representation and the Rajya Sabha seat for Scheduled Caste leaders. Some within the party fear that such a move could trigger opposition or dissatisfaction from backward-class communities. Because of this, there is also discussion about whether someone closer to Vijay personally should be fielded for the seat instead.

The report suggests that TVK is not limiting itself to just parliamentary representation. Even if Sampath Kumar does not receive the Rajya Sabha seat, there is reportedly consideration of appointing him as Tamil Nadu’s representative in Delhi. This would still give him an important political role and allow the party to use his organizational experience and loyalty.

The bigger question, however, remains Vijay’s final decision. The party appears to be balancing multiple factors at once: loyalty to workers who have built the organisation, caste representation, internal social equations, and the possible reaction from national allies like Congress. The outcome will likely signal how TVK plans to position itself politically in the months ahead, especially as it seeks to expand its influence beyond Tamil Nadu and build stronger links with national politics.

For now, the party’s inner circle is said to be continuing discussions, while the final call remains with Vijay. His decision will determine not only who gets the seat or appointment, but also how TVK presents itself as a growing political force with its own social and strategic calculations.
