Tragic Accident Outside Dallas Elementary School Leaves Community in Shock

A tragic collision outside Felix Botello Elementary School in Dallas on May 22 left a 9-year-old boy dead and three others injured, including the boy’s twin sister. Authorities said a pickup truck struck four pedestrians around 3:30 p.m. on South Marsalis Avenue as students were leaving school. The child who died was identified as Jose Garcia Ledesma. His sister, Keyla, was seriously hurt and taken to a nearby hospital, where she was reported to be in critical but stable condition. Another child and an adult were also injured in the crash.

The driver stayed at the scene, and early reports indicated speed was not believed to be a factor. Emergency responders arrived quickly as the area filled with concern and confusion. The accident happened in front of a school during dismissal time, intensifying fears among families who say the street is already dangerous because of traffic.

In the days after the crash, the school and community gathered to mourn Jose’s death. A candlelight vigil was held at Felix Botello Elementary School, where friends, classmates, teachers, and relatives remembered the young boy and supported his grieving family. Jose’s mother, Deyaneira Ledesma, described him as her “little angel” and said his death had left the family devastated. A fundraiser has been launched to help cover funeral expenses.

The tragedy has renewed calls from parents and residents for stronger traffic safety measures near the school. Community members say South Marsalis Avenue needs more protection for children walking to and from class. Parents have pointed to the lack of speed bumps, limited crossing support, and heavy vehicle traffic as ongoing concerns. Some families say only one crossing guard is stationed in the area and that more should be done to prevent another deadly crash.

Local residents have stressed that children should be able to walk home safely after school without facing life-threatening risks from passing vehicles. The incident has sparked broader discussion about school-zone safety, pedestrian protection, and whether existing traffic controls are enough in neighborhoods with high volumes of cars. For many in the Dallas community, the loss of Jose Garcia Ledesma has become a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary afternoon can turn into tragedy.

As Keyla continues recovering and the family mourns, the focus has turned to accountability and prevention. Parents, neighbors, and school supporters are urging officials to act quickly to improve safety around Felix Botello Elementary School so that no other family experiences the same heartbreak.
