Tom Hardy’s On-Set Clashes Aren’t New, Including Reported Tensions With Charlize Theron

Tom Hardy’s future on MobLand has become a subject of speculation after reports suggested he might not return if the Paramount+ series continues. Early accounts claimed the actor was not being asked back because of tensions with people involved in the production, including 101 Studios and executive producer Jez Butterworth. A later report from Variety, however, said Hardy was “not fired,” and that the door remains open for Season 3 while the creative issues are being worked through.

The situation has drawn attention because it adds uncertainty to a show that was already building momentum. MobLand debuted in 2025 and stars Hardy alongside Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. The first season became a success for Paramount+, and the series was renewed for a second season. Filming for Season 2 was completed in March, but a release date has not been confirmed. While the production appears to be moving forward, reports indicate there has been real tension behind the scenes.

Earlier reports painted a more specific picture of the alleged conflict. Hardy was said to have been frequently late to set during production on Season 2. He was also reportedly offering script notes and changing dialogue, according to a Puck report cited by Page Six. Variety added that Hardy may have been frustrated because Butterworth was allegedly delivering scripts late and was not always present on set to handle changes. That combination of issues appears to have fueled the current creative strain.

Even if the MobLand reports are still developing, the controversy fits into a broader pattern in Hardy’s career. He has been linked to difficult working relationships with several co-stars over the years. On Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardy and Charlize Theron were widely reported to have clashed during filming. Crew members described Hardy as difficult on set, and reports suggested Theron was unhappy with his tardiness. Zoë Kravitz later said the extreme conditions of filming in the desert, with long hours and isolation, may have intensified the tension.

Hardy has also been associated with a reportedly strained experience on Star Trek: Nemesis. In Patrick Stewart’s memoir, Stewart wrote that Hardy kept to himself and would not engage socially with the cast. Hardy later said he was terrified while making the film and felt far outside his depth at the time. Another reported clash came during Lawless in 2012, when Hardy and Shia LaBeouf were said to have gotten into a physical altercation. Director John Hillcoat confirmed there was “definitely a fight,” though LaBeouf later downplayed the rumors and said the two would wrestle rather than seriously brawl.

For now, the MobLand situation appears unresolved rather than final. Hardy is still reportedly attached to the project, and sources suggest the production is attempting to work through the disagreement creatively. Until more official word arrives, the actor’s return remains uncertain, but not ruled out.
