Roma’s Pursuit of Atalanta Stalwart Hits Major Setback

Atalanta striker Gianluca Scamacca has emerged as one of Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s top targets for the summer transfer window, but a move is unlikely to happen, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. Gasperini, who originally signed Scamacca three years ago, wants to reunite with the Italy forward as Roma prepare for the UEFA Champions League after a seven-year absence.

Scamacca returned to Italian football in 2023 when Atalanta paid about €23 million to sign him from West Ham United. The 27-year-old quickly became one of the club’s most important attacking players, but injuries have disrupted his progress over the past two years. He missed the start of the 2025/26 season because of a knee problem, which helped Nikola Krstovic move ahead of him in the squad hierarchy. Even so, Scamacca ended the campaign with 14 goals and three assists in all competitions, underlining his value when fit.

Roma are looking for a natural center-forward to strengthen their squad for European competition, and Gasperini sees Scamacca as an ideal option because of his familiarity with the striker’s qualities. Although Roma have already added Donyell Malen from Aston Villa, the coach still wants a reliable No. 9 to lead the line. Scamacca’s profile, physical presence and finishing ability make him an appealing target for the Giallorossi as they aim to compete at the highest level again.

However, Atalanta are determined to keep him. The club is expected to appoint Maurizio Sarri as their new manager, and Scamacca’s importance in Bergamo is not expected to change. Reports indicate that Atalanta will not consider selling him, despite the fact that he has a little over one year left on his contract. Their stance effectively closes the door on a transfer to Roma in the near term.

That means Roma may need to turn their attention elsewhere if they want to sign a proven Serie A scorer. Fiorentina striker Moise Kean has been mentioned as an alternative if the club cannot convince Atalanta to part with Scamacca. For now, though, Scamacca appears set to remain at Atalanta, where he is still viewed as a key figure despite recent injury setbacks.
