LIVE: Sorana Cîrstea vs. Xiyu Wang in the Roland Garros Round of 16

Sorana Cîrstea continued her strong run at Roland Garros on Sunday, May 31, 2026, as she faced China’s Xiyu Wang in the round of 16 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The match was scheduled as the first of the day on the eighth day of competition and was being shown live on Eurosport 2 and HBO Max, while also being covered in live text. For Cîrstea, a victory would mean reaching the French Open quarterfinals and matching the best result of her career in Paris, a feat she first achieved in 2009.

Cîrstea entered the match as the favorite after producing a dominant week on the Paris clay. In her opening match, the 36-year-old Romanian defeated Ksenia Efremova 6-3, 6-1. She followed that with a convincing second-round win over Eva Lys, during which she won 11 games in a row. Her most impressive performance came in the third round, where she overpowered Solana Sierra with a double 6-0 victory. That run made her the only Romanian still competing in the tournament and raised expectations that she could continue pushing deeper into the draw.

Wang, ranked No. 148 in the world, arrived in the fourth round after causing a surprise in the previous round by defeating Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-3, 7-5. Starodubtseva had herself produced a major upset earlier in the event by eliminating second seed Elena Rybakina, making Wang’s progress one of the more unexpected stories of the tournament. Although lower ranked, the Chinese player came into the match with momentum and confidence after her breakthrough win.

The head-to-head record also favored Cîrstea only modestly in terms of prior experience, as the two had met just once before. That match came in 2020 at the Shenzhen tournament on hard court, where Wang won in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Their meeting in Paris therefore represented both a chance for Cîrstea to avenge that loss and to extend her best-ever French Open campaign.

Early in the first set, Cîrstea started strongly and quickly established control. She won the opening game comfortably, then broke Wang to move ahead. Wang responded briefly to level the score, but Cîrstea remained aggressive and efficient from the baseline. She broke again and built a clear lead, taking advantage of a series of strong service games and consistent pressure on the Chinese player’s serve.

As the set progressed, Cîrstea created a double-break cushion and moved within reach of winning the opening set. Wang, however, stayed alive by recovering one break and extending the set longer than expected. Even so, Cîrstea remained in command for most of the opening phase, underlining the level that has made her one of the standout performers of the tournament so far.

If Cîrstea wins the match, she will move into the quarterfinals, where she would face the winner of the meeting between Mirra Andreeva and Jil Teichmann.
