Jenna Elfman has landed another network TV role, joining Fox’s upcoming series The Interrogator, but Tim Allen says the new project should not significantly interfere with her place on ABC’s Shifting Gears. Allen, who stars opposite Elfman on the sitcom, said he recently saw her in Las Vegas and discussed how the two shows might overlap. According to him, Elfman told him the new arrangement would only work if she could continue filming about eight episodes of Shifting Gears. Allen said he was relieved by that plan and expressed surprise that both productions could coordinate her schedule. He added that the new series has been structured so she will still appear in most of the season.
On Shifting Gears, Elfman plays Eve Drake, the romantic interest of Allen’s character, Matt Parker. Allen praised the dynamic between the two characters, saying Elfman has brought a different energy to the show and helped open it up creatively. He said her presence has added a romance element that appeals to viewers and that the flirtation between the characters is working well on screen. Allen also said he is interested in seeing how the relationship develops in the upcoming season, which is expected to begin filming in late July. He said he and the producers have not yet decided whether the characters will take a bigger step, such as moving in together, and said he would prefer the storyline to continue as a slower-moving dating arc.
Elfman had previously indicated that she intended to continue appearing on Shifting Gears even after being cast in The Interrogator, though she did not specify exactly how many episodes she would do. She has also spoken positively about working on the ABC sitcom, saying she enjoys collaborating with Allen and the rest of the cast and is impressed by the writing. Elfman said the scripts are tailored well to each actor and described the set as a place where the cast is often laughing throughout filming. She said the production has exceeded her expectations and that she remains enthusiastic about the show.
In addition to her comments about Shifting Gears, Elfman said she would be open to Allen making a guest appearance on The Interrogator, calling the idea entertaining. Allen, for his part, said he is pleased that the actress can balance both projects and believes the arrangement will allow her to stay involved in the sitcom while also taking on the new Fox series.
Shifting Gears is set to return for its third season on ABC in 2027.
