Teen Killed on Prom Night, Days Before Graduation: Deon Wiley

Deon Wiley III, a 17-year-old student from Saginaw, Michigan, is being mourned after his death just days before his high school graduation. Videos shared online showed Deon at his prom send-off wearing a gray suit and holding a stack of cash beside his date. Those clips later spread widely on social media, drawing attention to the teen shortly before reports emerged of his fatal shooting.

According to reports, Deon was allegedly killed outside a convenience store after attending a prom party on Friday, May 22. His death left Saginaw United High School devastated, especially because graduation was only days away. Authorities had not announced any arrests at the time of the latest reports, and the case remained open.

During the school’s graduation ceremony on Tuesday, May 26, Deon’s mother, Precious Sherman, accepted his diploma on his behalf. The moment was a solemn tribute to the student’s life and the future he had been preparing to step into. Saginaw United Principal Eric Gordon paused the ceremony so Deon could be honored alongside his classmates. As the Class of 2026 crossed the stage, Sherman walked in a gray cap and gown to receive the diploma in her son’s memory.

Principal Gordon spoke emotionally to the graduating class, reminding them that the celebration was also marked by loss. He acknowledged the years the students had spent together and urged the community to remember Deon not only for the tragedy surrounding his death, but also for the role he played as a friend and classmate. The ceremony became a moment of grief, reflection, and support for the family.

The loss quickly drew attention beyond the school community. Attorney Ben Crump publicly reacted to the news on social media, sharing one of the videos of Deon and a GoFundMe campaign created to help with funeral costs. In his message, Crump offered condolences to the family and expressed sympathy for their loss.

Social media users responded with shock, sadness, and frustration over the violence. Many left messages of comfort for Deon’s family and condemned the circumstances of his death. Others debated the viral attention surrounding the prom footage and the risks of public displays of wealth online. Still, the dominant reaction across platforms was grief over the death of a teenager who had been preparing to graduate and celebrate a major life milestone.

Deon’s passing has become a painful reminder of how quickly a joyful occasion can turn tragic. What should have been a season of celebration for a young graduate and his family ended instead in mourning, unanswered questions, and a community left searching for justice.
