8 Rescued After Texas Roller Coaster Malfunction on Iron Shark

Eight people were safely rescued after a roller coaster malfunction left them stranded about 100 feet above the ground at Pleasure Pier in Galveston, Texas, on May 28. The ride involved was the Iron Shark roller coaster, which came to a stop during its initial ascent, according to the amusement park’s chief operating officer, Terry Turney.

Turney said the stop was caused by a malfunction, but emphasized that the ride was designed to halt immediately in order to protect passengers. He said the park’s priority quickly became the safety of the eight guests who were left suspended on the ride. Because of the height and the situation, park officials contacted the fire department for help in bringing everyone down safely.

The Galveston Fire Department was called to the scene just after 5:00 p.m. local time. Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. said crews arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m. and began a careful rescue operation. Each rider was secured in a safety harness and guided into a truck-mounted basket, which was then lowered back to the ground. The rescue took place over several hours, as emergency personnel worked methodically to ensure that every rider was brought down without injury.

Varela said the responders were able to use their training to keep the riders calm during the ordeal. He noted that the crew reassured the stranded guests that the equipment being used for the rescue was safe and reliable. The operation was handled one rider at a time, reflecting the need for caution given the height and conditions.

The incident drew attention because the riders remained stuck high above the ground for an extended period before being rescued. While the malfunction created a stressful experience for those on board, officials said the ride’s safety system functioned as intended by stopping the coaster when the problem occurred. No injuries were reported in the account provided, and all eight riders were eventually returned safely to the ground.

Pleasure Pier’s response focused on emergency coordination and guest safety, with park leadership working alongside firefighters to resolve the situation. The rescue highlighted both the potential risks of amusement park ride malfunctions and the importance of immediate safety protocols when mechanical issues occur.

By the end of the operation, all eight guests had been evacuated safely from the Iron Shark roller coaster. The incident serves as a reminder that even when safety systems prevent a worse outcome, ride malfunctions can still lead to frightening and prolonged rescues requiring specialized emergency assistance.
