Alan Alda Reflects on Turning 90 Amid Parkinson’s Disease Battle

Alan Alda is reflecting on turning 90 and what it means to grow older while living with Parkinson’s disease. Four months after celebrating his birthday on January 28, the actor spoke about the milestone during the Conversation: More Rules for Aging event at 92NY in New York City on May 21. Alda described a quiet birthday dinner that included a cupcake with a candle and a waiter leading the room in a playful version of “Happy birthday, older gentleman.” He said the moment felt like a gentle reminder of his age, especially when the staff noted that he had blown out the candle himself.

The MAS*H and The West Wing star said birthdays take on a different meaning as people age, and the reality of getting older becomes harder to ignore. Alda noted that he got an even stronger sense of that when he realized that his three daughters are now all on Medicare. He shares daughters Eve, Elizabeth and Beatrice with his wife, Arlene Alda.

Alda’s comments come as he continues to speak candidly about aging and health later in life. The actor has previously discussed how Parkinson’s disease has affected him, but his remarks at the New York event focused more on perspective than on decline. Rather than framing 90 as a loss, he treated it as a moment of recognition, humor and adjustment.

The actor’s story resonated as an example of how older adults often measure time through family milestones as much as their own. For Alda, the realization that his daughters are Medicare-age underscored how much of life has passed, while also showing that he remains engaged, observant and amused by the experience. His recollection of the dinner, the birthday candle and the waiter’s joke offered a light moment around a significant age, blending humor with the realities of aging.

Alda, now among Hollywood’s most enduring and respected figures, continues to draw attention not just for his long career but also for his openness about the aging process. His reflections suggest a mix of gratitude, surprise and acceptance as he enters his 90s.
