SNL Alum Cheri Oteri Reveals Breast Cancer Surgery, Names Surprising Supporter

Cheri Oteri has revealed that she underwent breast cancer surgery after being diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, an early form of breast cancer. Speaking on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast with Chelsea Handler, the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member said she learned of the diagnosis before attending a Milken Institute dinner in April focused on women’s health and research, where she met former first lady Jill Biden.

Oteri, 63, said she told Biden about her diagnosis during the event and was deeply moved by the support she received. According to Oteri, Biden immediately asked when her surgery was scheduled and told her, “I’m going through this with you.” Oteri said Biden continued checking in before and after the procedure and described her as a woman with “a huge heart” and “a beautiful human being.” She said she felt strongly supported during the experience.

The comedian also shared that her recent surgery went well and that she is now feeling “great.” She said doctors told her that “everything looks normal, fine” after a second lumpectomy performed just days before the podcast appearance. A lumpectomy is a surgery that removes a portion of breast tissue and is commonly used to treat breast cancer.

Oteri said she was able to catch the cancer early, which she believes made a major difference. She used her platform to encourage women to stay on top of mammograms and to seek a second opinion if needed. She said her first doctor had recommended a more aggressive treatment plan that she later questioned.

In April, Oteri posted photos from the Milken Institute dinner, including one with Jill Biden and another of herself on a police motorcycle surrounded by officers. In her caption, she called the evening inspiring and said the group discussed women’s health issues, opportunities, obstacles, and the importance of advancing research. She also joked that she got to “play with” Biden’s security.

Oteri’s account highlights both the personal impact of an early cancer diagnosis and the importance of support during treatment. Her comments also served as a public reminder about preventive screening, early detection, and advocacy in medical care.
