Shrek 5 Releases Trailer Featuring a Wild Donkey; Watch the Video

Universal Pictures has released a new teaser for Shrek 5, the next chapter in the long-running animated franchise that is scheduled for release in the first half of 2027. The film will bring back Shrek, Fiona, their now-grown children, and Donkey, who leave the swamp for a new adventure across the kingdom of Far Far Away.

While the teaser does not reveal specific plot details, it suggests that the new movie will keep the sharp, layered humor that helped make the Shrek series a landmark in animation. The preview includes jokes aimed at both children and adults, continuing the franchise’s signature blend of slapstick, irony, and double meaning. Early moments in the teaser reference Donkey in a playful, exaggerated way, while Gingy appears with oversized gumdrop-like features, reinforcing the film’s comedic tone.

The trailer also appears designed to appeal to audiences who grew up with the original Shrek films, many of whom are now adults and may return to theaters for the new release. That strategy could help broaden the movie’s reach, combining nostalgia for longtime fans with the family-friendly appeal that has defined the series since its debut.

Shrek 5 is being directed by Brad Ableson, Walt Dohrn, and Conrad Vernon. In the English-language voice cast, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are all set to return to their iconic roles as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. They will be joined by Zendaya and Marcello Hernández, the rising Saturday Night Live comedian, adding fresh names to the ensemble.

The new installment continues one of DreamWorks’ most successful properties, a franchise known for satirizing fairy-tale conventions while still delivering heart, humor, and mass appeal. With its familiar characters, returning stars, and a teaser that leans into the series’ irreverent style, Shrek 5 is positioning itself as both a nostalgic sequel and a new event for animation fans.
