Serena Williams Reportedly Planning Tennis Comeback

Serena Williams is reportedly preparing for a stunning return to professional tennis nearly four years after her last competitive match. According to recent reports, the 44-year-old former world No. 1 has requested entry into the doubles draw at the Queen’s Club Championships in London, which are set to begin on June 8. The proposed comeback would see Williams team up with rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko, currently ranked world No. 9 in doubles. The news surfaced during an episode of the “Served” podcast, hosted by former player Andy Roddick, a close friend of Williams. If confirmed, the appearance would be Williams’ first competitive outing since her farewell at the 2022 U.S. Open, where she lost in the third round to Ajla Tomljanović. That match was widely viewed as the emotional close of one of the greatest careers in tennis history.

The reported development is notable because it appears to contradict several public comments Williams has made over the past year. When speculation intensified in December after reports said she had re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s anti-doping testing pool, Williams pushed back on social media and said she was not returning, calling the rumors a “wildfire.” She offered a similar response during a January appearance on NBC’s “Today” show, where host Savannah Guthrie asked about a possible comeback. Williams laughed off the suggestion at first, saying she was enjoying retirement, then declined to discuss any official paperwork related to doping or competition eligibility.

In recent months, Williams has instead focused on her personal health and family life. She has spoken openly about using weight-loss medication, saying it helped her lose 35 pounds, lower her cholesterol by 30 percent, and reduce her long-term risk of heart disease. Williams has also said she feels stronger and more active, noting that she regularly runs, walks long distances and practices pilates. She mentioned that she had even recently hit tennis balls for fun, though she stressed that she was not doing so with the pressure of professional competition.

Williams has also drawn attention for candid remarks about motherhood and discipline. She sparked debate online after sharing a personal story on X about denying her daughter Olympia a sleepover after the child refused to go to bed. Williams admitted the punishment was emotionally difficult for her as well, but many users criticized her approach. She later discussed parenting on a live taping of the “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson” podcast, where she spoke about raising Olympia and her younger daughter Adira with husband Alexis Ohanian. Williams said she once made a rule not to spend more than 24 hours away from Olympia until the child turned six, acknowledging the boundary may have been extreme while describing it as part of her commitment to being present as a mother.

For now, the reported Queen’s Club request has not been officially confirmed, but the possibility of Serena Williams returning to competition has already sent shockwaves through the tennis world.
