Walmart Memorial Day Hours: Is the Store Open or Closed?

Memorial Day, observed on Monday, May 25, means shoppers have plenty of options for last-minute grocery runs, refreshments and grilling supplies, while many businesses with holiday closures will remain shut. Most restaurants, grocery stores and major national retailers are expected to stay open, but banks, post offices, shipping services and the stock market will be closed because the day is a federal holiday.

Walmart will be open on Memorial Day 2026 and is operating under regular store hours, the company confirmed to USA TODAY. Most Walmart locations are open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, making the retailer a convenient option for holiday shoppers who need food, drinks or other essentials.

Most grocery chains are also expected to remain open during their normal hours on Monday, May 25. Kroger said on its website that its stores will operate regular hours, though pharmacy and clinic hours may differ. Other grocers, including Trader Joe’s, Meijer, Publix, Whole Foods and Food Lion, have traditionally stayed open on Memorial Day. Still, shoppers are being advised to confirm with their local stores, since holiday schedules can vary by location.

One major exception is Costco, which will be closed on Memorial Day, according to the company’s website. Sam’s Club will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members, then close at 8 p.m. BJ’s warehouses will operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the holiday.

The holiday traffic underscores Memorial Day’s role as both a day of remembrance and the unofficial start of summer shopping and outdoor gatherings. While many consumers will be able to shop as usual, essential services such as mail delivery, banking and stock trading will pause for the federal holiday. Shoppers planning ahead for cookouts or weekend travel are likely to find most retail and grocery options available, with only a few large chains adjusting their schedules.
