Scott McTominay’s overhead kick to feature on new £20 banknote

Bank of Scotland has unveiled a limited-edition £20 note to celebrate Scotland’s dramatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking one of the country’s most memorable football moments with a design rooted in Scottish identity and national pride.

The note features Scott McTominay’s now-famous overhead kick, a goal widely regarded as one of Scotland’s greatest ever. The bank said the special edition combines two long-standing parts of Scottish life — football and banknotes — in a modern and creative tribute to the team’s achievement.

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at Bank of Scotland, said securing qualification in such dramatic fashion was a moment fans would never forget, and that the bank wanted to commemorate it in a way that reflected Scottish culture. She said the partnership with McTominay helped bring the design to life and supported a wider charitable aim.

Proceeds from the initiative will help raise funds for Crisis, the homelessness charity, as it works to end homelessness across Scotland. The bank said the collaboration was intended not only as a celebration of football success, but also as a way to support a social cause connected to communities across the country.

Scotland’s qualification comes ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will include 48 teams and be staged from 11 June to 19 July across 16 cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Scotland will begin their group-stage campaign against Haiti on 14 June in Boston, before meeting Morocco on 19 June, also in Boston. Their final group match will be against Brazil on 24 June in Miami.

The expanded tournament format will make the 2026 finals the largest in World Cup history, with matches spread across North America in a schedule that will test travelling teams and supporters alike. For Scotland, the return to the world stage adds further significance to the commemorative banknote, which captures a moment of sporting triumph that resonated far beyond the pitch.
