Sarah Michelle Gellar Pays Tribute to Buffy Co-Star Anthony Head After Death Rumors

Sarah Michelle Gellar is grieving the loss of a beloved mentor and on-screen father figure after the death of Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Head died from complications of pneumonia at the age of 72, according to his daughters, Emily Head and Daisy Head.

Gellar, who starred alongside Head on the long-running series from 1997 to 2003, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram on June 5. In her post, she referenced a line associated with Giles and wrote that she was not okay after learning of his death. She described herself as the lucky one because she knew him, and thanked Daisy and Emily for sharing their father not only with her, but with the world. Gellar included several throwback photos with her message, reflecting the close bond she formed with Head during and after their time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Head’s death also prompted a moving tribute from James Marsters, who played Spike on the series. Marsters said there was “a hole in the world” after Head’s passing and remembered him as a consistently kind and steady presence on set. He praised Head as the best actor in the cast and said he was fortunate to have known him and learned from him. Marsters added that Head made the world better simply by being in it and thanked him for everything he gave.

Head was one of the most important figures in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, portraying the wise and protective librarian Rupert Giles, a mentor to Gellar’s Buffy Summers and a central part of the show’s emotional core. His performance helped define the series, which became a cultural touchstone for fans of fantasy television and earned a lasting place in pop culture history.

The tributes from Gellar and Marsters highlight the deep personal and professional impact Head had on those who worked with him. For many fans, he was best known as Giles, the calm and knowledgeable guide who helped Buffy through supernatural battles and personal struggles. For the cast, he appears to have been much more than a co-star — he was a trusted presence, a source of support, and a respected colleague.

News of Head’s death has resonated across the Buffy fandom, where the actor is remembered not only for his performance, but also for the warmth and dignity he brought to the role. Gellar’s tribute, in particular, underscored the emotional connection between the actors and the lasting influence Head had on her life.
