Royal Ascot LIVE: Market Movers, Ground Updates and Non-Runners as Britain’s Greatest Flat Meeting Begins

Frankie Dettori has reflected on the unique demands of Royal Ascot, describing the meeting as “five days of pure intensity and pressure” as he returns to the Berkshire racecourse to enjoy the action from a different perspective.

The retired rider, who was crowned top jockey at Royal Ascot on seven occasions during his career, said he is pleased to be back at one of racing’s most prestigious events without the stress that comes with riding. Dettori said he is excited to be present at the meeting in the sunshine, but acknowledged that the atmosphere is now very different for him compared with his days in the weighing room.

He explained that while he loves the sport and continues to feel closely connected to it, he does not miss the pressure that jockeys face across the five days of racing. Having experienced Royal Ascot’s demands firsthand, Dettori said he understands the strain on the riders and no longer envies those still competing for major wins at the meeting.

Dettori emphasized that he is now enjoying the event as a spectator and observer, rather than as a participant under pressure to deliver results. He said he is looking forward to watching another strong week of racing and being part of the Royal Ascot atmosphere in a more relaxed role.

Asked which race or runner he was most eager to see, Dettori singled out William Buick on Notable Speech in the opening race. His comment highlighted the continued interest and attention surrounding the top names at the meeting, even as he watches from outside the saddle.

Royal Ascot remains one of the most important fixtures in the British racing calendar, attracting leading jockeys, trainers and horses from the UK and abroad. For Dettori, who built much of his reputation at the meeting, returning to the track offers a chance to appreciate the event without the physical and mental strain that defined his riding career.

His remarks underline both the glamour and the pressure that come with competing at Royal Ascot, a meeting known for its high stakes and elite-level racing. While Dettori is no longer chasing winners himself, his presence at the event continues to draw attention, given his long-standing association with the festival and his status as one of the most recognizable figures in the sport.

As Royal Ascot unfolds, Dettori is content to enjoy the spectacle, support the action, and watch the next generation of top jockeys take on the challenge he once mastered.
