Manchester United: Mason Greenwood Reaches Transfer Agreement as Romano Reveals INEOS Windfall

Manchester United are set for further financial gains this summer as Mason Greenwood edges closer to a move to AS Roma and Ruben Amorim’s switch to AC Milan reduces the amount United must pay in compensation. Greenwood, who left Old Trafford in 2024, is understood to have an agreement in principle with Roma over a long-term contract, with the Serie A club now preparing talks with Olympique Marseille. United hold a 50% sell-on clause on the forward, meaning they stand to receive a significant fee if the transfer is completed.

Greenwood has been one of Marseille’s most productive players since joining the French club, scoring 48 goals and providing 17 assists in 81 appearances over the past two seasons. However, recent reports have suggested tension behind the scenes and a likely exit this summer. Roma, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, are said to view the English forward as a major target for the transfer window. Journalist Nicolo Schira reported that Greenwood has reached an agreement in principle with the Italian side on a contract running until 2031, worth €5 million per year plus bonuses. If the deal goes through at the expected level, United could collect at least £20 million from their sell-on clause.

United’s summer finances have already been improved by Champions League qualification, and the club are expected to be active in the market as they seek to strengthen their squad for a return to Europe’s top competition. Additional funds may also come from possible sales of players such as Marcus Rashford and Manuel Ugarte, further increasing the budget available to the club’s recruitment team.

In another boost for INEOS, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United will save more than £9 million because of Ruben Amorim’s move to AC Milan. Amorim was sacked by United in January, but the Italian club’s decision to appoint him means some of the compensation due to him will no longer have to be paid by the Premier League side. Romano said the move represents “extra money” for United, describing it as positive news for the club.

Romano also reported that Amorim has now been appointed as AC Milan’s new head coach on a two-year deal until 2028, with an option for a further season until 2029. That appointment brings an end to speculation over his future and creates an unexpected financial benefit for United.

The developments involving Greenwood and Amorim mean United could recoup or save tens of millions of pounds this summer, helping the club balance its spending as it prepares for a crucial transfer window.
