Ray J Says Health Is Taking a Backseat as He Launches New Boxing Career

Ray J says his fighting career is not over, even after a harsh mixed martial arts debut ended in a second-round knockout and a hospital stay. The singer and media personality was defeated by comedian Supa Hot Fire at Adin Ross’ Brand Risk 14 event at the UFC Apex, where a right hook to the jaw sent him crashing to the canvas and led to the referee stopping the bout. What initially looked like a routine celebrity fight loss quickly became more serious when reports confirmed that Ray J was hospitalized after the event.
While recovering, Ray J addressed concerns about his health from his hospital bed. He said the knockout worsened existing heart problems and described his condition as fragile. Earlier in the year, he had already spoken publicly about major cardiovascular issues, saying his heart was only functioning at 25 percent after a severe pneumonia scare. In January, he claimed that doctors had warned him he might not have many years left, adding fuel to ongoing concern from fans and followers.
Despite those health worries, Ray J is moving forward with another fight. He announced on Instagram that he has signed a contract for his next combat sports appearance, revealing that he will headline an event called “The Back To School Brawl” on August 23. He said the upcoming bout will take place at 215 pounds for a light heavyweight title. That timeline gives him about three months to recover, train, and prepare for another match.
In his message to fans, Ray J said he believes he has “5 to 10 more fights” left before retirement. He framed the decision as a commitment to continue competing rather than stepping away after the knockout and hospitalization. He also asked supporters to keep him in their prayers as he begins his next training camp.
The announcement comes amid skepticism from some critics who have questioned the seriousness of Ray J’s reported medical issues. Both Ray J and his mother, Sonja Norwood, have pushed back against those doubts, insisting that his health concerns are real. Even with that controversy, Ray J’s latest statement makes clear that he intends to stay active in combat sports for the foreseeable future.
His return to the ring will draw attention not only because of his celebrity status, but also because of the health risks involved. After a knockout loss and reports of cardiac complications, his decision to continue fighting raises questions about how much he can safely endure. Still, Ray J appears determined to press on, betting that he can recover in time and add more bouts to his fighting resume.
