Quentin Tarantino Calls Hollywood a “Sausage Factory”

Quentin Tarantino has sharply criticized the state of post-pandemic Hollywood, calling the industry a “flavorless sausage factory” and saying many new films are weakened by audience pandering, poor casting, implausible plotting, and weak storytelling. In a piece for Sight & Sound magazine, the Oscar-winning director said it has become “almost impossible” for him to watch a new movie without picking it apart, adding that recent films often inspire contempt rather than excitement. He argued that the movies of the last six years have been so disappointing that they make the 1980s “seem like the 1930s” by comparison.

Despite his harsh assessment, Tarantino said a few films have still impressed him, including West Side Story and both chapters of Horizon: An American Saga. But he said he would now “rather read a book” than spend time on most contemporary releases. The one recent film that truly held his attention, he said, was the Netflix crime thriller The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, with supporting performances from Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle and Kyle Chandler.

Tarantino praised The Rip for its suspenseful, original premise and strong execution, highlighting Carnahan’s direction, the cast, the cinematography, and especially the screenplay written by Carnahan and Michael McGrale. The film follows two Miami-Dade police officers who uncover corruption tied to $20 million in cartel cash.

The director’s comments come amid an increasingly public series of disputes with other Hollywood figures. Earlier this year, Tarantino exchanged criticism with Rosanna Arquette after she condemned his repeated use of racial slurs in his films, calling it racist and creepy. Tarantino responded sharply, accusing her of lacking class and honor.

He also drew backlash after attacking Paul Dano during a podcast discussion of the best films of the 21st century. Tarantino said There Will Be Blood would have ranked higher if not for Dano’s performance, which he dismissed as weak and uninteresting. His remarks prompted a wave of support for Dano from fans and industry peers, including George Clooney.

Tarantino, known for his outspoken views and celebrated films including Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has long been willing to challenge Hollywood norms. But his latest criticism represents one of his most combative assessments of modern filmmaking, reflecting both his frustration with the industry and his willingness to provoke controversy.
