Major Search Enters Second Day on Welsh Beach After Reports of Two People in Distress

A major search is under way off the Welsh coast on Tuesday, June 9, after reports that two people were in distress near Cefn Sidan beach in Carmarthenshire. Police and Coastguard teams launched a multi-agency operation late on Monday evening after concerns were raised about two individuals near the water’s edge.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the call came in at about 9.50pm on Monday, June 8, reporting two people wearing dark clothing and waving a torch near the shoreline at Cefn Sidan beach in Pembrey, near Burry Port. Officers said it remains unclear whether the two people became caught in difficulty or came to harm at the location.

Emergency services have not yet located the pair, and the search continued into Tuesday morning. Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have been at Cefn Sidan beach on Monday evening and may have seen anything that could assist the operation.

The force said officers are working closely with the Coastguard as part of the ongoing search, which involves multiple agencies. The public has been asked to contact police if they have any relevant information.

Cefn Sidan is a long sandy beach stretching for more than eight miles and is well known in the area. It was the first beach in Wales to receive a Blue Flag award. The coastline is backed by dunes, salt marshes, Pembrey Forest and Pembrey Country Park, making it a popular destination for visitors.

During the summer months, lifeguards patrol the main beach entrance to help keep beachgoers safe. The current search has prompted fresh concern about safety along the shoreline, particularly after dark.

Police said anyone who was at the beach on Monday evening and noticed anything unusual should come forward. The search remains ongoing as officers and rescue teams continue efforts to establish what happened to the two people reported missing near the water.
