Maja Chwalińska Battles for Millions in Paris as French Tax Authorities Eye Her Fortune
Polish tennis player Maja Chwalińska is on the verge of the biggest breakthrough of her career at Roland Garros in Paris, where her run has already brought her a substantial financial reward. So far, she has earned 750,000 euros gross, which is roughly 3.18 million złoty. However, French taxes on sports prize money are high and can take about 45 percent of winnings, meaning her net amount from that stage would be around 412,500 euros, or about 1.8 million złoty.
If Chwalińska wins her Saturday match, her gross prize money would rise to 1.4 million euros, equal to roughly 5.9 million to 6 million złoty before tax. After deductions, she would receive around 770,000 euros, or approximately 3.2 million to 3.3 million złoty.
The biggest payday at the tournament goes to the Roland Garros champion. The women’s singles winner receives 2.8 million euros gross, which amounts to about 11.8 million to 11.9 million złoty. After tax, that would leave around 1.54 million euros, or roughly 6.5 million to 6.6 million złoty.
Chwalińska’s path in Paris has been impressive. In the first round, she defeated Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng of China 6-4, 6-0. She then beat 23rd seed Elise Mertens of Belgium by the same scoreline. In the third round, she overcame Maria Sakkari of Greece 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, before beating France’s Diane Parry 6-3, 6-2 and Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, seeded 22nd, 7-6(7-3), 6-3.
Ranked 114th in the world and having come through qualifying, Chwalińska has already secured a major ranking milestone. After the French Open, she is guaranteed to enter the WTA top 100 for the first time in her career. In the live rankings, she is projected to rise as high as 30th, reflecting the scale of her surprise run in Paris and the significance of her performances on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
