Life, Larry & the Pursuit of Unhappiness Trailer: First Look at Larry David’s HBO Historical Sketch Comedy

HBO has released the first look at Larry David’s new limited sketch comedy series, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, which will premiere on Friday, June 26 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and stream on HBO Max. The seven-episode series will roll out weekly, with the finale scheduled for August 7.
The show is framed with a comic historical premise: “Those who don’t know history… are doomed to watch Larry David repeat it.” The project brings together David with familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside a lineup of guest stars.
The cast includes Jon Hamm, Sean Hayes, Jane Krakowski, Toby Huss, Isla Fisher, Jerry Seinfeld, Joe Manganiello, and Barack Obama. The series is executive produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama.
The teaser for the series leans into the unlikely collaboration between David and the former president. In the trailer, Obama jokes that after dealing with difficult world leaders and major global problems, nothing prepared him for working with Larry David. The line sets the tone for the show’s self-aware, absurd style.
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness marks another high-profile HBO project for David, whose work on Curb Your Enthusiasm made him one of television’s most recognizable comic voices. The new series extends that style into a sketch format while keeping the same dry, confrontational humor associated with his past work.
HBO’s announcement also arrives as the network continues to update its 2026 slate of programming. The new show adds another prestige comedy title to the lineup, combining satire, celebrity cameos, and political star power.
With David at the center and the Obamas behind the scenes, the series is positioned as a major summer release for HBO. Its weekly schedule through August 7 gives the network a steady run of episodes during the late June and July period, when premium cable and streaming services often compete for attention with event television and returning franchise titles.
The first look underscores the series’ blend of improvisational comedy, cultural references, and unexpected casting. By pairing Larry David’s cynical comedic persona with a wide-ranging ensemble and the involvement of Barack and Michelle Obama’s production banner, HBO is signaling a project designed to draw both comedy fans and viewers curious about the unusual creative partnership.
