Tim Allen Says He Never Really Wanted to Be a Dad and Opens Up About Sobriety

Tim Allen has reflected candidly on fatherhood, saying he “never really wanted” to be a dad and describing raising his two daughters as a long learning process. In a recent interview, the actor said parenting did not come naturally to him and that he views his experience as “a work in progress.” Allen shares daughter Katherine with his first wife, Laura Deibel, and daughter Elizabeth with his wife, Jane Hajduk.
Allen said his family life was shaped by different circumstances with each child. He noted that he was often away while Katherine was young, leaving most of the parenting to her mother. He also said growing up in a large family with seven boys and two girls gave him a different perspective on raising daughters. Rather than focusing on what he described as the superficial side of girlhood, such as clothing, appearance, and gossip, he said he tried to emphasize practical life skills, including finances and self-reliance, which he believes matter for both boys and girls.
The actor also spoke about the bond he has built with his daughters over time. He said fatherhood has given him a deeper understanding of how much children absorb from their parents, recalling moments when his older daughter repeated things he had said years earlier. Allen said that communication with his daughters has taken on a different and more meaningful level as they have grown older.
He also addressed the role sobriety has played in his parenting. Allen said he was not sober during some of his older daughter’s formative years and acknowledged that he later made amends. By contrast, he said his younger daughter has known him only as a sober father, something he described as a major difference in their relationship. Allen said his oldest daughter does not hold his past against him, though he has thought about those years often.
The conversation came as Allen prepares for the release of “Toy Story 5,” set to arrive on June 19, 2026. Looking back on his life, the actor also revisited the mistakes of his early years, including the criminal behavior that led to his imprisonment for two years after college. He said that time in prison became a turning point, leading him to read about successful people and rethink his future.
Allen said he was determined never to repeat those mistakes and expressed regret over the pain he caused his family, friends, and himself. His comments highlighted both the personal struggles and the growth that have shaped his life, from his troubled past to his long sobriety and evolving role as a father.
