World Cup 2026: Steve Clarke Faces Midfield Selection Dilemma for Scotland

Scotland manager Steve Clarke faces a difficult selection decision over whether to include John McGinn in the starting lineup for the opening game, despite the Aston Villa captain’s importance to the national team. McGinn was named on the bench in Scotland’s match in New Jersey last week and was then left out entirely for the win against Curacao at Hampden, prompting debate over whether he should be rested or restored to the side.

The discussion has grown because McGinn has been one of Scotland’s most reliable performers over many years. In 86 caps, he has scored 20 goals, making him fifth on Scotland’s all-time scoring list, and he has also provided 10 assists. His recent club form has only strengthened his case for selection. He finished a standout season by leading Aston Villa to the Europa League trophy, underlining that he remains a major influence at the highest level.

However, Scotland’s strong midfield display has created a tactical dilemma. The combination of Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson, Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Christie worked impressively, especially in the first half of recent matches, and there is a concern that changing too much could disrupt the balance that has been built. Clarke may therefore be reluctant to alter a midfield that looked settled and effective.

Former Scotland forward James McFadden said it would be remarkable to see a Scotland team without McGinn in it, but he still expects the midfielder to come back into the side. McFadden suggested that if changes are made, it would be better for a midfielder to miss out than one of the strikers. He also argued that the team should keep two forwards in the lineup because of the attacking options they offer. Even so, he added that McGinn’s absence from the first game would not mean he will play a lesser role in the matches that follow.

A case has also been made for managing McGinn’s workload. Former Scotland midfielder Leanne Crichton believes resting him for the opening game could be sensible after a demanding season. She pointed to his 53-game campaign, the physical and mental toll of Villa’s European run, the travel involved, and an injury he dealt with late in the season. Crichton said McGinn looked tired during the Euros and questioned whether Scotland really need to use him from the start again so soon.

The debate leaves Clarke with a familiar balancing act: preserve the form of a midfield that is working well, or restore one of Scotland’s most experienced and influential players. McGinn’s quality and leadership remain unquestioned, but the decision may come down to fitness, freshness and the manager’s desire not to disturb a winning formula.
