Jessica Simpson Reveals Intense Pressure to Lose Weight Early in Her Career

Jessica Simpson opened up about the pressure to lose weight early in her music career during a concert in Pennsylvania on June 11, saying the expectations made her feel like a failure for years. The 45-year-old singer told the crowd that returning to the stage in her 40s feels especially meaningful because she missed much of her 30s and now feels “like I’m me again.” She described performing as more comfortable than being at home and said it has become a place where she feels most like herself.
Simpson recalled that when she was first trying to break into pop music, she was often compared with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. She said she originally believed she had been signed because of her voice, but was then told she needed to lose 15 pounds. Simpson said she was only 115 pounds as a teenager and described the request as especially harsh for someone so young. She added that later she was told her second record required her to have a six-pack, something she said was not realistic for her body type.
The singer said these pressures came with a long list of expectations about how she needed to look and present herself in order to be accepted as “Jessica Simpson” and succeed in the industry. She said she often felt as though she was never good enough and believed she was failing because she could not meet those standards. Her comments highlighted the emotional toll that body image pressures can take on young performers and the way those experiences can linger for years.
Simpson also spoke about how far she has come in recent years. In October 2025, during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, she said she had gone through an “incredible journey” of learning self-love and compassion while trying to stay vulnerable and find strength in that vulnerability. At the time, she was promoting Nashville Canyon: Part 1, her first new music release since 2008.
Her recent concert comments were part of a broader period of openness from the singer. Earlier this month, she also spoke publicly about her past struggles with drinking during another performance. Together, the remarks show Simpson reflecting candidly on the personal challenges that shaped her life and career, while also emphasizing the confidence and perspective she says she has gained as she returns to music and live performance.
For Simpson, the stage now represents more than a comeback. It appears to symbolize healing, self-acceptance and a chance to redefine success on her own terms after years of feeling judged by impossible standards.
