Jennifer Lopez Viral “Off Campus” Costume: How It Came Together

Prime Video’s “Off Campus” has gone viral thanks to a scene featuring Mika Abdalla wearing a recreation of Jennifer Lopez’s iconic 2000 Grammys Versace jungle dress. The look, worn by Abdalla’s character Allie while dancing with Dean, closely mirrors the plunging tropical-print gown that made Lopez a fashion headline two decades ago and later became one of the most talked-about red carpet dresses in pop culture.

Costume designer Charlene Akuamoah said the dress required careful styling to stay in place. She relied on fashion tape, especially Booby Tape, to support the daring neckline and keep the gown secure during filming. Akuamoah also said she likes Nippies tape and nipple covers because of the range of skin tones available, which she considers important for costume work. The tape choices helped the outfit hold up on camera through the dance scene set to Lopez’s “On the Floor.”

Akuamoah said she knew the dress had to be perfect as soon as she read the script and saw that Allie would be wearing it. Her background in fashion gave her a strong appreciation for the original Versace design and for Donatella Versace’s work. She said the team understood from the first fitting that the dress would be a moment, but they did not expect the scene to spark such a large online response.

The recreation has drawn widespread attention across social media, with clips continuing to circulate weeks after the series premiered on Prime Video. Lopez herself even acknowledged the moment, adding to the buzz around the costume. The reaction has underscored how powerful a memorable fashion look can be when it is reintroduced in a new context.

The original Versace jungle dress, worn by Lopez to the 2000 Grammy Awards, became one of the most famous dresses in modern celebrity fashion. Its cultural impact was so significant that it is often credited with helping drive the creation of Google Images, since so many people searched for photos of the look. More than 20 years later, the dress remains instantly recognizable and continues to inspire new fashion moments in film and television.

Akuamoah said the viral reaction was a reminder that a great fashion piece can still make an impact every time it returns. For “Off Campus,” the recreation was more than a costume reference — it became a standout pop culture moment of its own, connecting a new generation of viewers to one of the most iconic looks in red carpet history.
