Darren Dreger’s Maple Leafs Trade Idea Is One Sabres Fans Won’t Like

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ disappointing season ended with an unexpected payoff: the first overall pick in the draft. That position gives the franchise a chance to select top prospect Gavin McKenna, but it also opens the door to a potential blockbuster trade if Toronto decides a faster rebuild is the better route. According to Darren Dreger on TSN 1050’s First Up, the Maple Leafs would have to at least listen to offers for the pick, though any deal would need to bring back a major package in return.
Dreger suggested the St. Louis Blues could be one team with the type of assets Toronto might consider. He pointed to a possible package built around center Robert Thomas and defenseman Colton Parayko, noting that St. Louis was active in trade discussions near the deadline and could be positioned to make another major move. For the Buffalo Sabres, that idea is especially notable because those same players were already on their radar earlier this year.
Buffalo aggressively pursued Parayko at the trade deadline and believed it had a deal in place before the veteran defenseman used his no-trade clause to block a move. That experience makes Thomas a particularly important name for Sabres fans to track. The 26-year-old center has developed into a top-line player and is entering the heart of his prime. Over the last five seasons, he has produced at a high level, combining scoring, playmaking, and consistent offensive production. He has 373 points in 361 regular-season games over that span and has reached at least 20 goals in each of the past three seasons.
Reports after the deadline indicated the Sabres were willing to offer a package of four significant pieces for Thomas, though they reportedly did not want to include Josh Norris. Norris’ uneven finish to the season could change Buffalo’s thinking, but it remains unclear whether St. Louis would value him enough to make a deal work. The Sabres’ interest in Thomas shows they are still looking for a major addition down the middle, especially as they try to take the next step in a rebuild that has dragged on longer than expected.
For Buffalo, the priority remains retaining its own key players, including Alex Tuch and Zach Benson, while also finding ways to strengthen the roster. Jarmo Kekalainen will be under pressure to improve the team’s outlook, and preventing Toronto from landing a player like Thomas would be an added bonus. If the Maple Leafs truly explore trading the first overall pick, the Sabres may need to stay aggressive and ensure they are ready with a competitive offer of their own.
