Jenna Bush Hager Criticized Over Emotional On-Camera Moment as Savannah Guthrie Breaks Down Over Missing Her Mother

Savannah Guthrie has opened up about the emotional toll of her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, saying she is still struggling months after the 84-year-old vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. During a recent appearance on the Today show, Savannah became tearful while discussing her return to work and admitted she has been crying every morning on the way to and from the studio. She said that balancing grief and daily life has been difficult, but that she is trying to keep going for her family and her role on television.
Savannah said she likely would not have returned to work if she had any other job, explaining that her public-facing position has helped her continue despite the pain. She also reflected on what her mother would tell her now, saying Nancy would likely encourage her to “keep going.” Savannah added that she tries to show her children that sadness and joy can exist at the same time, and said she is grateful for the support of close friends and coworkers.
The emotional segment also drew attention because of co-host Jenna Bush Hager’s response. Jenna praised Savannah’s strength while fighting back tears herself, telling her that coming to work each day and leading the show has not been easy. Savannah responded by saying she cannot even look at Jenna without crying because she is her best friend. While many viewers were moved by the exchange, others criticized Jenna’s reaction on social media, calling it overly dramatic.
Nancy Guthrie has been missing for four months, and the case remains unresolved. Savannah briefly stepped away from Today after her mother disappeared, traveling to Arizona to support her siblings while authorities investigated. She returned to the program on April 6 and has since spoken publicly about trying to cope with uncertainty and grief.
In a March interview on Dateline with former co-host Hoda Kotb, Savannah described the family’s pain as unbearable and pleaded for her mother’s safe return. She said at the time that she had not given up hope. That hope appears to remain, as she recently shared a message on Instagram calling for her mother to be brought home.
Nancy was reported missing after failing to arrive at a friend’s home to watch a livestreamed church service. When family members checked her house in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood, investigators found suspicious circumstances and treated the property as a potential crime scene. Authorities later released surveillance footage showing a masked person on the front porch removing a Nest doorbell camera around the time Nancy disappeared.
The FBI and local law enforcement have also reviewed ransom notes sent to media outlets and the Guthrie family. Despite the ongoing investigation and months of searching, no arrests have been announced and Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown.
