James Handy, Top Gun Actor, Dies After Stabbing Incident

James Handy, the veteran actor known for roles in film and television including Jumanji, Top Gun: Maverick, Alias, The West Wing, NYPD Blue, Profiler and Melrose Place, has died at the age of 81 after being stabbed at his Los Angeles home. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at about 9:30 a.m. to a call of “unknown trouble” in the 19200 block of Erwin Street in the West Valley area. Police said the 911 caller made a disturbing statement claiming responsibility for the killing. Handy was found unconscious in the front yard of his residence and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Handy had suffered a stab wound to the chest. Authorities identified the suspect as Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, who lived at the same address with his mother. Police said Gledhill reportedly flagged down responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for. He was arrested and booked into jail on one count of murder, with bail set at $2 million. LAPD said detectives believe the case was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Details about Handy’s personal life remained limited. It is not publicly known whether he was ever married, and his girlfriend’s name has not been released. It also has not been confirmed whether Handy had any children of his own. The information available indicates that he was dating someone at the time of his death, and that her son is now facing murder charges in connection with the stabbing.
Handy built a steady career across film and television over many years. In Jumanji (1995), he played an exterminator in the fantasy adventure film that also starred Robin Williams. His final on-screen credit came in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where he played Jimmy in the hit sequel to the 1986 original. In television, he appeared in several well-known series, including Alias, where he was featured from 2002 to 2006, as well as The West Wing, NYPD Blue, Profiler and Melrose Place.
His death has added to a growing list of losses in the entertainment industry in 2026, a year that has already seen several notable figures remembered by fans and colleagues. While police continue to process the case, the fatal stabbing has drawn attention because of its sudden nature and the connection between the victim and the suspect. Handy’s long acting career, especially his work in widely recognized projects, has made his death resonate with audiences who remember his many screen appearances.
