Hyderabad Rains: City Thrown Into Chaos After Just 15 Minutes of Rain

Hyderabad experienced intense rain on Tuesday evening as the southwest monsoon entered the city, bringing temporary relief from several days of severe heat but also causing widespread disruption across the metropolitan area. What began as the season’s first major rain quickly turned into a major civic challenge, with roads, flyovers, and low-lying areas flooded within a short span of time. Residents who left offices after work were caught in the downpour and many were forced to wade through waterlogged streets, while traffic came to a standstill in several busy parts of the city.
The rain exposed serious shortcomings in urban preparedness, according to the report. In many areas, stormwater accumulated rapidly and streets resembled ponds. Drainage systems overflowed, and in some locations motor pumps had to be deployed to remove water. The situation worsened because traffic police and civic authorities were unable to manage vehicle movement efficiently, leading to long delays and severe inconvenience for commuters. Families with children and elderly passengers also faced distress as the city struggled to respond to the sudden rain.
Strong winds accompanied the showers, causing trees to fall in around 100 locations across Hyderabad. Electric poles were also damaged in several places, and snapped power lines led to electricity outages in parts of the city. In Chandrayangutta, within the Old City area, two young men reportedly died after coming into contact with live electrical wires. In another incident at Chatter Bazaar, a small arch collapsed onto a road, though no one was injured because the area was empty at the time.
The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Vinayak Nagar under the Malkajgiri zone, where 12.85 centimeters of rain was measured. Several other localities received more than 8 centimeters. Major traffic congestion was reported in Madhapur, Kondapur, Gachibowli, Miyapur, and Mehdipatnam, where vehicles were stranded for hours. The report said the lack of preparedness by GHMC, HYDRA, the Water Board, and revenue officials added to the public hardship.
According to the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre director, the southwest monsoon had entered Gadwal district on June 4 and reached Hyderabad on Tuesday. She said the monsoon was now spreading rapidly across Telangana. Heavy rain is likely in several districts over the next two days, and within four to five days the monsoon is expected to cover the entire state. Thunderstorms, lightning, and intense rainfall are also forecast during this period.
Apart from Hyderabad, moderate to heavy rain was reported in Siddipet, Jangaon, Hanumakonda, Sircilla, Kamareddy, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Medak, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Mahabubabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Narayanpet, Gadwal, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Nirmal, and Jagitial districts. The weather department said heavy rainfall may continue on Wednesday in parts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medak, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet, and Gadwal districts.
