“Hacks” Finale Recap: Producers and Stars Explain the Deborah-Ava Ending Twist
The series finale of “Hacks” delivers an emotional ending centered on Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, using a serious health scare to raise the stakes without killing off the show’s lead character. In the finale, Deborah reveals that the cancerous mass removed in a previous episode has spread, but she refuses chemotherapy and instead plans to travel to an assisted suicide facility overseas. True to her need for control, Deborah wants to “go out on top,” even if Ava strongly disagrees with the plan.
Ava ultimately follows Deborah to Paris, where the two share one last unforgettable trip filled with food, sightseeing, nightlife, and the kind of banter that has defined their relationship over five seasons. Their time together becomes a turning point. As they joke about Deborah’s illness, Deborah realizes her condition could become the basis for new comedy material. She asks Ava to help her write another special, reframing what seemed like an ending into a new creative beginning.
Co-creator Lucia Aniello says the illness was always meant to serve the story of Deborah’s redemption and her return to writing, not to lead to her death. Fellow creators Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs say the finale was designed from the start to echo the show’s beginning, where Deborah’s banter with Ava first sparked the pilot. According to the creators, ending the series with the two characters together was the most hopeful conclusion they could imagine.
The finale also resolves other major storylines. Deborah opens a new Vegas casino called The Diva, with Marcus, Marty, and several of her longtime staffers and friends now working there. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Kayla have a professional breakthrough in Los Angeles when they uncover misconduct at Latitude and take control of a smaller version of the talent agency, with help from their assistant Randi. Their storyline gives the pair both comic and emotional payoff after a difficult season.
The episode ends on a visually striking note, with Deborah and Ava walking down the Las Vegas Strip as a drone shot rises above them and a Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand duet plays. Cast members Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder both praised the finale, calling it fitting, emotional, and true to the heart of the series. Smart highlighted the final hand-clasp joke between Deborah and Ava as one of her favorite moments, while the creators confirmed the joke had been written long before Einbinder was cast.
Although the ending closes the series, the creators are not ruling out a future reunion, revival, or return to these characters. For now, they say they are working on a new project under their Warner Bros. TV deal. Even so, they describe “Hacks” as a once-in-a-lifetime show and say the finale preserves the quality and emotional core that made it special.
