Granit Xhaka and Switzerland “Ready” for the “Best World Cup of All Time”
Granit Xhaka says Switzerland are entering the World Cup with a stronger sense of belief and ambition than at any previous major tournament, as they prepare to open their campaign against Qatar in Santa Clara on Saturday. The 33-year-old captain said the team is “hungry like never before” and ready both mentally and physically to take the first step toward what he described as a potential “best World Cup ever.” Xhaka acknowledged that talking about big goals is easier than achieving them, but insisted Switzerland are prepared for the challenge.
Switzerland’s best World Cup result to date remains a quarter-final appearance, and their last tournament in 2022 ended in disappointment with a 6-1 defeat to Portugal in the round of 16. Coach Murat Yakin said the team has learned from that painful exit and now arrives with more maturity, confidence and depth. He said the squad is four years more experienced and significantly stronger and broader in terms of options than it was in Qatar in 2022.
Yakin also responded with a smile to comments from Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui, who described Switzerland as one of the best teams in the tournament. Calling Lopetegui “a fox” for making such praise, Yakin said Switzerland are aware of their own quality but emphasized that the opening match will be a test of determination as much as talent. He described the first game as a battle of will, underlining the importance of a strong start.
The coach also downplayed concerns over striker Breel Embolo, who joined the team later than planned because of visa issues. Yakin said Embolo remains a key player for Switzerland, noting that he does not need many chances to score and that the delay should not affect his freshness or readiness for the match.
With a more seasoned squad, a clear sense of momentum and high expectations from within, Switzerland are aiming to begin the tournament with a victory and build confidence for the road ahead. The match against Qatar is set for Saturday evening in Santa Clara, where Switzerland will look to turn belief into results and make a positive statement in their World Cup opener.
