Backrooms Sequel Update: Current Status of Kane Parsons’ Hit Film
Following the strong $118 million opening of A24’s Backrooms, a sequel is already in the works, though it is still at a very early stage. Filmmaker Kane Parsons, who built the Backrooms property through YouTube before bringing it to feature form, is reportedly looking for a screenwriting collaborator to help develop the next installment. Parsons remains under contract with A24 for more Backrooms projects, but there are no announced stars, green light, or formal production details yet.
The success of Backrooms is being viewed as part of a broader trend showing that YouTube creators and internet-born IP can now translate into major theatrical business. The film was made for under $10 million and had support from several companies, including 21 Laps, Atomic Monster/Blumhouse, Odd Fellows, and co-financier Chernin Entertainment. Together with titles like Markiplier’s Iron Lung and Curry Barker’s Obsession, the film is being cited as evidence that studios are finding new ways to connect with Gen Z audiences. Backrooms drew a crowd that was 88% under the age of 35.
The article also points to the box-office performance of Obsession, another project tied to Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, which recently became Focus Features’ highest-grossing film domestically with $105.7 million. That success came after the studio picked it up out of TIFF Midnight for more than $15 million, with Blumhouse helping spur the acquisition.
At the box office, Backrooms is still performing strongly. The film is said to be earning more than $6 million on the current day, and it is expected to remain solid next weekend despite competition from new releases including Amazon MGM Studios’ Masters of the Universe and Paramount’s Scary Movie. Forecasts suggest Backrooms could post a second weekend of around $36 million, indicating a strong hold after its breakout debut.
Overall, the film’s performance has turned Backrooms into a clear commercial hit and positioned the property for expansion. With a sequel already under discussion and Parsons actively shaping the next chapter, A24 appears to have another franchise candidate on its hands. The rapid rise of the film also reinforces the growing influence of digital creators in the theatrical marketplace, especially among younger moviegoers.
