Euphoria Creator Sam Levinson Defends Killing Off Zendaya’s Character Rue in Season 3 Finale

Sam Levinson defended the decision to kill off Zendaya’s character Rue Bennett in the Season 3 finale of HBO’s “Euphoria,” calling it the show’s most “honest ending” and saying that “people like Rue don’t make it.” In post-finale interviews, Levinson said he wanted to avoid softening the reality of addiction and relapse, especially in an era shaped by fentanyl, where a single mistake can be fatal. He said the storyline was meant to reflect the harsh consequences faced by young people struggling with drug use and to avoid giving the character a false second chance.
Levinson also said the death was intended as a tribute to Angus Cloud, who died in July 2023 at age 25 from a drug overdose. Cloud played Fezco, one of the show’s original breakout characters, and was included in Rue’s final sequence through previously unseen test-reel footage of Cloud and Zendaya. Levinson said he chose to reuse the footage because he wanted to see the two characters together again and to honor Cloud’s memory in a meaningful way. In the episode titled “In God We Trust,” Rue takes laced pills from Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and later suffers a fatal overdose. Cloud’s character appears during the death scene as part of Rue’s flashback-like experience.
The creator said he wanted the season to confront the consequences of fentanyl directly and emphasized that the danger of modern drug use is far more acute than when he was younger. He added that if he were facing the same circumstances today, he likely would not have survived, citing the spread of fentanyl in the United States. Levinson also framed the ending as a way to acknowledge those who did not get another chance.
Zendaya responded emotionally in the behind-the-scenes segment, describing her time on the series as a “pleasure and an honor.” She thanked the cast and crew, saying many of them had been with her since the beginning and had watched her grow up. Her farewell highlighted the long-running bond formed during the production of the series.
Rue’s death follows the violent exit of Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs in the previous episode, while other original characters, including Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie Howard and Hunter Schafer’s Jules Vaughn, survived. Levinson also addressed speculation about a possible Season 4, saying he has not ruled it out, even though he approaches every season as if it may be the last.
