Alexa Demie Addresses Retirement Rumors as Sam Levinson Reveals HBO Initially Questioned Her for Maddy Role on Euphoria

Alexa Demie has addressed long-running rumors about her career, fame, and future in a new interview as Euphoria moves toward its Season 3 finale. The actress, best known for playing Maddy Perez on the HBO series, spoke candidly about her early experiences auditioning in Hollywood, the pressure she felt around sex scenes, and why she is comfortable keeping a lower profile despite widespread attention.

Demie responded to speculation that she plans to leave the industry once Euphoria ends, jokingly asking, “Should we just ride with it?” Her comments suggested she is aware of the rumors but not eager to correct every piece of online chatter. She also reflected on the frustration of auditioning for roles where Hispanic identities were excluded or where she did not feel seen as a fit. She said those experiences were difficult, especially when she was younger and repeatedly felt tempted to quit acting, though she insisted she never truly would have walked away. Instead, she described herself as determined to prove she could succeed.

The actress recalled first auditioning for the role of Rue before eventually being brought back for Maddy. At one point, she said she was upset enough to leave and work on music with a friend, only to receive a call saying the producers wanted her back. In discussing the casting process, Demie and creator Sam Levinson reportedly acknowledged that HBO initially imagined Maddy as a blonde cheerleader and did not see her as the right choice. Levinson said he tried to help her navigate those expectations during the audition process by advising her how to present herself in a way that would not trigger assumptions about her background.

Demie also spoke about filming sex scenes and how uncomfortable she felt with them early in her career. She said she believed declining such scenes could cost her the role, even though no one explicitly told her that. After filming a particularly intimate montage involving Maddy and Nate, she realized she did not like how it felt and raised the issue. According to Demie, the production responded with empathy, and she did not film similar scenes again.

She also addressed why she does not want more fame, saying people often make decisions for performers without considering their own preferences. Demie said she likes her life as it is and would not change it, suggesting that her quieter approach to celebrity is intentional rather than accidental. She framed her stance as a matter of personal choice, not lack of ambition.

The interview offered a rare glimpse into Demie’s perspective as Euphoria continues to shape her public image. She remains one of the show’s most talked-about stars, but her remarks made clear that she values control over her career, her boundaries, and her visibility. She was also recently seen in a behind-the-scenes photo dump shared by co-star Sydney Sweeney.
