Ariana Grande Releases “Hate That I Made You Love Me” Music Video, Co-Starring Justin Long

Ariana Grande has launched her new “Petal” era with the release of the music video for “hate that i made you love me,” which premiered on Monday, June 1. The visual marks a fresh chapter following her Eternal Sunshine period and continues the cinematic style she has been building with recent releases.

Directed by Christian Breslauer, who also helmed the Brighter Days Ahead short film, the video opens with Justin Long in a dark and unsettling scene as he buries Ariana in an underground bunker filled with notebooks labeled with her “insecurities.” What follows is a surreal psychological sequence in which Ariana appears as a haunting presence, emerging in Long’s car and pushing him toward a breakdown as he becomes increasingly unstable.

The video escalates into increasingly eerie and chaotic moments. In one scene, Long attempts to destroy their shared memories by setting them on fire, only to accidentally ignite himself. Later, he arrives at a diner where the strange atmosphere deepens: the waitress is named Petal, and the kitchen staff suddenly transforms into Ariana. Soon, he realizes that everyone in the diner is Ariana, turning the setting into a surreal nightmare that blurs identity, memory, and obsession.

As the story continues, Long tries to reverse what has happened by returning to dig Ariana up and descend into the bunker. Instead, he discovers that Ariana is no longer there, and the final scene reverses the power dynamic as Ariana buries him instead. The video uses horror imagery and dark humor to visually express emotional chaos, regret, and the aftermath of a damaged relationship.

The song itself reinforces those themes with lyrics centered on guilt, self-awareness, and romantic fallout. Grande sings about regretting that she made someone fall in love with her, delivering the track with a mix of vulnerability and distance. The chorus highlights the emotional contradiction at the heart of the song, suggesting both apology and frustration.

Grande previously praised the track when announcing it to fans, calling it one of her favorite songs she has ever written. She said it was produced with longtime collaborators Ilya and Max Martin, whom she described as among her favorite creative partners and dearest friends. Her comments framed the release as especially meaningful and personal.

With its dramatic visuals, horror-inspired storytelling, and emotionally direct lyrics, “hate that i made you love me” positions itself as a standout moment in Ariana Grande’s evolving creative era. The video blends theatrical spectacle with a deeply personal tone, continuing her pattern of turning heartbreak into bold, stylized pop art.
