Euphoria Officially Ends with Rue’s Death in the Series Finale

HBO has confirmed that Euphoria will not return for additional seasons, ending the series after its third season. The announcement was made on Monday, June 1, following creator Sam Levinson’s remarks on the “Popcast,” and was later confirmed by HBO to Variety. The decision comes after a dramatic season 3 finale that closed the chapter on several major characters, including Rue, played by Zendaya, and Nate, played by Jacob Elordi, who were killed off onscreen.

The finale marked a turning point for the series, which returned amid controversy and debate over its creative direction. Levinson faced criticism for the way the show depicted Cassie’s OnlyFans storyline, with some creators expressing concern about how their work was represented. Despite the backlash, Levinson defended his approach, saying the intention was to push boundaries while adding layers of absurdity and breaking away from a purely internal fantasy perspective.

Levinson explained that the humor and impact of the scene came from the contrast between Cassie’s stylized online persona and the reality of someone else filming her. He said the creative team wanted to avoid staying too close to her illusion and instead highlight a broader sense of irony and discomfort. According to Levinson, that “jump out” effect was essential to the scene’s tone.

Director of photography Marcell Rév also discussed the visual strategy behind the controversial sequences, saying the team deliberately chose a mid-century home with a slightly dated and tacky look rather than a modern luxury setting. He noted that the aesthetic of OnlyFans posed a creative challenge because it had to be translated into the visual language of the show. The production used practical lighting choices, including ring lights, to make the scenes feel authentic while also exposing the darker atmosphere around them.

Levinson said the goal was to show both sides of the experience: the polished image Cassie tries to present and the bleak emotional reality surrounding it. He described the result as “gnarly and jarring,” emphasizing that the show aimed to capture the tension between performance and despair.

With HBO’s confirmation that season 3 is the final chapter, Euphoria closes as one of the most talked-about and polarizing series of recent years. The drama’s return drew strong reactions for both its storytelling and its provocative style, and the finale now brings the story to an official end. Euphoria is currently streaming on HBO.
