At The Gates has announced a new limited-edition book for fans as the Swedish melodic death metal band continues to navigate a period of reduced activity following the death of frontman Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg in 2025. The band shared the news through Instagram, revealing a collectible publication titled …And Justice For Art, written by journalist and musician Ramón “Oscuro” Martos García.
The book is dedicated to the visual history of At The Gates and other classic metal album covers. It runs 372 glossy color pages and features more than 700 images, including sketches, finished artworks, interviews, and behind-the-scenes accounts of how some of metal’s most recognizable album covers were created. The project includes commentary and artwork from noted illustrators such as Travis Smith, Eliran Kantor, Dan Seagrave, Costin Chioreanu, and Valnoir, along with contributions from metal figures including Soulfly and Nailbomb’s Max Cavalera, Carcass’ Jeff Walker, Amorphis’ Esa Holopainen, and others.
A key detail that has drawn attention is the rarity of the release. According to the band’s announcement, only 500 copies of the book will be available worldwide, making it a highly limited item for collectors and longtime followers of the group. The foreword was written by David Vincent, also known as Evil D, the former Morbid Angel bassist and current frontman of Vltimas. Vincent has a long connection to At The Gates, dating back to the extreme metal scene of the 1990s, when the bands toured together and helped shape the era’s sound and reputation.
At The Gates described the project as an “Ultimate Edition” that includes a chapter focused on the sleeve artwork for Slaughter of the Soul, the band’s landmark 1995 album. The book also covers the cover art histories of other major metal releases, including Slayer’s Reign in Blood, Black Sabbath’s Black Sabbath, Obituary’s Cause of Death, Iron Maiden’s Killers, Opeth’s Heritage, Katatonia’s Dead End Kings, and more.
Fan reaction to the announcement was enthusiastic, particularly among supporters who have been unable to see the band perform live during its current hiatus. Social media responses praised the book as a valuable and impressive collector’s item, with several fans saying they had already received or planned to purchase it.
The book release comes after a difficult year for the band. At The Gates issued The Ghost of a Future Dead, its eighth studio album and first since Lindberg’s passing, as a tribute to the late vocalist. On Sept. 16, 2025, the band confirmed that Lindberg had died at age 52 from complications related to adenoid cystic carcinoma. His death marked the end of an era for one of Sweden’s most influential extreme metal bands, whose legacy includes helping define the melodic death metal sound through albums such as Slaughter of the Soul.
