Euphoria Concludes with Dark, Explosive Series Finale

HBO’s Euphoria ended with Season 3, closing out the series with a dark, emotional finale that stayed true to its intense tone. The final episode, “In God We Trust,” premiered on May 31 and brought major character deaths, including Rue, played by Zendaya, in a devastating conclusion to the show’s story. The finale also saw Laurie, portrayed by Martha Kelly, die by suicide after DEA agents raided her compound, while Ali, Rue’s sponsor, carried out revenge in a western-style shootout that left drug dealer Alamo Brown and his associate G dead.
Series creator Sam Levinson said he originally had a different ending in mind when writing Season 3 in 2023, but he changed course after the death of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco. Cloud died in July 2023 from an accidental overdose at age 25. Levinson said the loss forced him to rethink the story and emphasize the real consequences of addiction, explaining that he wanted viewers to feel the weight of losing someone they love.
Cast members reflected on filming the finale and their characters’ endings. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje described Alamo as a character who enjoyed the “chess game” of power and control, while Kelly said Laurie’s fate was disturbing but memorable, especially because she got to perform a stunt. Levinson also addressed criticism that Euphoria glamorizes drug use, saying the series shows both the seduction of addiction and its psychological, physical, and spiritual consequences.
Both HBO and Levinson have confirmed that Season 3 is the end of Euphoria. The series first debuted in 2019 and became a major cultural hit, especially after launching the careers of stars including Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer. Levinson said the finale brings closure to the story he set out to tell about addiction and its consequences, and he described it as the natural ending of the series.
