Alexa Demie has spoken candidly about the frustration she felt early in her acting career as a half-Mexican woman navigating casting rooms that seemed to close doors before she even had a chance to audition. In her early 20s, while reading a character breakdown for a lead role, she noticed that Hispanic actors were not included among the permitted ethnicities for the part. The experience stayed with her and made her increasingly aware of how limited opportunities could be for Latina actresses in Hollywood. She said she repeatedly encountered similar moments that made her feel unwelcome or excluded, and at one point she felt close to giving up, as many young actors do when the industry becomes discouraging. Still, she said she was never truly ready to walk away from acting. Instead, she felt determined to prove that she belonged and could succeed despite the barriers in front of her.
Her breakthrough came with HBO’s Euphoria, the series that brought her wider recognition and introduced her to a much larger audience. But even that opportunity was not simple. According to creator Sam Levinson, the network initially did not believe Demie was right for the role of Maddy Perez, the sharp-tongued high school queen bee and cheerleader who is both best friends with Cassie Howard, played by Sydney Sweeney, and the on-and-off girlfriend of Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. Demie ultimately won the part, and Maddy became one of the most memorable characters in the series, helping establish her as a standout presence in television.
Her comments reflect a broader issue in entertainment, where representation and access continue to shape who gets seen, who gets cast, and who gets told they fit a certain role. For Demie, the struggle was not only about landing work, but also about confronting assumptions tied to ethnicity and appearance.
